Vietnamese Students Festival opens in Hong Kong for 1st time

The Vietnamese Student Festival in Hong Kong was held for the first time with an aim to connect the community and offer them job and study options after graduation.

The Vietnamese Student Association in Hong Kong held the event at Billion Plaza in Hong Kong, China in the support of the Vietnam Consulate General in Hong Kong and the Federation of Hong Kong Industries (FHKI).

More than 100 students, research fellows, and experts from both Vietnam and Hong Kong attended the event.

Delivering an opening speech, Doctor Nguyen Hoang Long, researcher at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and President of the Vietnamese Student Association in Hong Kong (VSAHK), said it’s the big event marking the association’s development.

At the event, students were given a chance to get the sharing of many experts, senior lecturers, economists, and business executives of Hong Kong who are running business in Hong Kong and Vietnam. The talks help provide students with connections with potential employers. The overall goal of the event is to strengthen the connection between Hong Kong and Vietnam’s localities for better partnership in the future.

According to Doctor Nguyen Hoang Long, the majority of Vietnamese students study in the leading universities in Hong Kong under scholarships. Half of them are postgraduates and research fellows at well-known institutes. He believed that the community would develop strongly in the next few years and help contribute to the relationship.

Hoang Lan Huong, assistant to Vietnamese General Consul in Hong Kong in charge of Vietnam and Hong Kong education cooperation, said the event is a turning point opening a new chapter for the VSAHK. It helps students expand their communication network and meet future employers.

At the event, Huong shared the employment and answered the questions related to it in the state agencies for those who wish to return to Vietnam for work.

Giving some ideas, Anthony Lam, CEO of FHKI and Deputy Chairman of Golden Resources Development International Limited said many companies working in Vietnam are raising localization shares. Taking his company as an example, he said the number of foreign experts in Golden Resources Development International is now four instead of 12 before. Many department heads are Vietnamese, he affirmed.

In this regard, Vietnamese students are totally able to work in offices in Hong Kong, Vietnam, or regional countries.

In addition, Anthony Lam shared skills required to work in Hong Kong, advantages of working in Hong Kong, and skills possibly gained in working for multinational companies in Hong Kong and Hong Kong’s companies.

Meanwhile, Monica Zhang, CEO of EVA Group, an electronic group having two plants in Haiphong, Vietnam, talked about job opportunities after graduation in Hong Kong and returning to Vietnam to work for Hong Kong-based companies. She gave an insight into market potentials in Vietnam, investment trend from Hong Kong, skills for young people to get promoted at work, and ability to utilize knowledge in the national building. 

Regarding postgraduate options, Prof. Wong Suk-ying, Department of Sociology and Director of Office of Admissions and Financial Aid, CUHK, who has 30 years teaching at universities in China, Japan, and the US, provided students with helpful sharing about postgraduation, job opportunities, and in-depth research programs in Hong Kong and comparison between job options in Hong Kong and some countries as well. Her talks help students have a better understanding of research and pathway for the future. 

Do Van Quyet at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (UKUST), member of the Vietnamese Student Association in Hong Kong, said the event enabled him to meet almost all students in Hong Kong and experienced people who can help him in the future job.

Nguyen Nu Quynh Trang, student at CUHK, considered the event a helpful chance for her connections and research.

Established in December 2022, the VSAHK follows its mission to support students in Hong Kong, advertise the image of Vietnam, and forming a united Vietnamese student community. In 2022, there were more than 100 students studying in eight public schools in Hong Kong. So far this year, an additional 30 students study there.

Since its establishment, the association has worked with the Vietnam Consulate General in Hong Kong in events related to introducing life and study in Hong Kong, advertising Vietnamese culture, and connecting students and research fellows to have a diversified and developed study environment.
