The city aims to enhance its urban transport expertise by collaborating with Hanoi on smart transport initiatives.

The offer was made during a meeting on September 26 between Lai Zhi Hong, Vice Mayor of Guangzhou, and Nguyen Trong Dong, Vice Chairman of Hanoi People’s Committee.

Lai highlighted that his visit aligns with a memorandum of understanding signed last year to bolster cooperation between the two cities. With a population of around 19 million, the city has developed approximately 600 km of urban railways, serving over 3.5 million passengers daily, Lai briefed.

At the meeting, representatives from Guangzhou Metro Group proposed collaborating with the Hanoi Urban Railway Management Board on various transport projects, including planning, consulting, construction, and financing.

For his part, the Hanoi’s Vice Chairman noted that the city has high interest in strengthening ties with Guangzhou, particularly in infrastructure and waste management.

Dong stressed the shared characteristics and history between the two cities, highlighting the potential for expanded collaboration. He mentioned Hanoi's goals to reduce private vehicle use, improve air quality, and enhance residents’ quality of life, underscored by its plan to complete ten urban railway lines by 2030, with two lines currently operational.

In terms of the proposal from Guangzhou Metro Group, he described it as timely and relevant. Additionally, Dong pointed out Hanoi’s need for international partnerships in waste management to cope with a daily waste output of 7,000-8,000 tons. Though two waste-to-energy plants are operational, their capacity still falls short of demand of the city.
