The leadership of the Hanoi government has pledged to facilitate the implementation of a US$4.2 billion smart city project, anticipated to significantly transform the northern region of the city.

This commitment was articulated by Tran Sy Thanh, Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee, during a meeting with Shingo Ueno, Chairman and CEO of the Japan-based Sumitomo Corporation, on October 9.

In the course of the meeting, Ueno provided an overview of the scale and activities of Sumitomo Corporation, which established its office in Vietnam in 1997. The corporation has successfully executed numerous projects in the country, including the Thang Long Industrial Park in Hanoi.

Ueno expressed the hope that the Hanoi city government would support and expedite the requisite procedures to ensure the timely progression of the smart city project, currently being developed in Hanoi's Dong Anh District.

Proposed by Japan, this project is a key component of the urban development initiative along the Nhat Tan - Noi Bai corridor. The investment is spearheaded by North Hanoi Smart City JSC, a joint venture formed between Vietnam's BRG Group and Japan's Sumitomo.

During the meeting, Ueno and representatives from BRG Corporation offered several recommendations aimed at enhancing the project's effectiveness.

Chairman Tran Sy Thanh acknowledged these proposals and noted that Sumitomo's business activities in Vietnam have yielded impressive outcomes over the past two decades. He emphasized that Hanoi remains open to potential partnerships, including with Sumitomo, to further explore and expand investment opportunities in areas of mutual interest and strength.

Regarding the smart city initiative, Thanh assured that the Hanoi government is committed to ensuring the smooth implementation of the project. He expressed confidence in the effective collaboration between BRG and Sumitomo and instructed relevant agencies in Hanoi to work together to identify and resolve any obstacles. He also emphasized the importance of guiding investors in adhering to regulatory procedures while ensuring compliance with legal standards and project timelines.

Situated at the northern end of Nhat Tan Bridge along the Nhat Tan - Noi Bai development axis in Dong Anh District, the smart city project spans 272 hectares and is projected to cost approximately US$4.2 billion.
