Meeting of Governors and Mayors of ASEAN capitals opened in Vientiane

The 2024 MGMAC, themed "Strengthening Connectivity and Resilience for Sustainable Development in ASEAN Cities," centered around five core areas: livable and sustainable cities, green tourism, sustainable economic development, environmentally sustainable cities, and climate change resilience.

The Meeting of Governors and Mayors of ASEAN Capitals (MGMAC) and the ASEAN Mayors Forum (AMF) officially commenced in Vientiane, Laos, on September 18, bringing together representatives from ASEAN capitals and cities, including ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn. Tran Sy Thanh, Chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee led the Vietnamese delegation.

Overview of the meeting. 

In his opening address, Vientiane Mayor Atsaphangthong Siphandone highlighted the significance of MGMAC and AMF since their establishment in 2012, noting that these forums have provided key platforms for local leaders to engage, share ideas, and enhance cooperation among ASEAN capitals and cities. They offer venues for discussing solutions to common challenges and developing strategies that benefit both individual cities and the broader region.

Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone lauded the event as a crucial opportunity for ASEAN mayors to build upon the commitments made in previous meetings. He stressed the importance of promoting modern, livable, and sustainable urban development.

This meeting is expected to play a pivotal role in advancing urban development, facilitating the exchange of best practices, and implementing action plans aimed at improving connectivity and resilience in ASEAN capitals and cities.
