Hanoi eyes EU’s support in promoting green economy

Ambassador Julien Guerrier expressed gratitude to the Hanoi government for their assistance and facilitation of recent cultural and economic programs organized by the EU in the area.

Hanoi looks forward to receiving the EU’s support in promoting green and circular economic models.

Chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee Tran Sy Thanh shared the view during a meeting with EU Ambassador to Vietnam Julien Guerrier on November 22.

During the reception, the EU Ambassador to Vietnam Julien Guerrier mentioned that he had visited Vietnam multiple times before assuming his term of office and noted the positive changes in the country over the past 30 years. He highlighted Hanoi as a city with impressive developmental speed, yet one that retains its unique charm and ancient features.

Ambassador Julien Guerrier expressed gratitude to the Hanoi government for their assistance and facilitation of recent cultural and economic programs organized by the EU in the area. He expressed hope for continued coordination and support from the city in upcoming exchange and cooperation activities to achieve positive results.

Furthermore, Ambassador Julien Guerrier emphasized the EU's readiness to share experiences and support Hanoi and Vietnam in achieving sustainable development goals, particularly in combating climate change and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

During the occasion, Ambassador Julien Guerrier proposed that the two sides collaborate to expedite the implementation of various aspects of the urban railway project. He suggested establishing a joint steering committee to oversee and meet periodically to ensure adherence to the proposed roadmap and quality standards.

Chairman of Hanoi People's Committee Tran Sy Thanh, in agreement with Ambassador Julien Guerrier's assessment, emphasized the deep and extensive development of the relationship between Vietnam and the EU in recent years. He highlighted significant cooperation frameworks, including the Vietnam-EU Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) and the EU-Vietnam Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA).

Chairman Tran Sy Thanh shared the city's recent socio-economic situation, stating that Hanoi is contemplating adjustments to the Capital's General Plan for 2045, with a vision towards a green, clean, and modern city by 2065. Consequently, the city aims to continue learning from the EU's experience in building a green, circular economy and developing smart infrastructure.

Moreover, Chairman Tran Sy Thanh expressed the city's hope for increased EU investment cooperation in education and training at all levels. Regarding the urban railway project, the city government is committed to expediting procedures and collaborating with EU investors to ensure timely implementation.
